Bringing Specialty Coffee to Madewell's First Mountain Town Store

Gallatin Crossing Mall, Bozeman, Montana • November 15-16, 2025

There's something about driving through Yellowstone at dawn that makes you question your career choices.

It's 3 AM. The temperature gauge reads 0 degrees. We're hauling thousands of dollars of espresso equipment through one of the most beautiful—and unforgiving—stretches of America, hoping our machines survive the cold. Four hours from Jackson Hole to Bozeman. Grand Teton. Yellowstone. Empty roads and the kind of darkness that makes you feel very small.

But here's the thing: when Madewell opens their first store in a mountain town—Gallatin Crossing Mall in Bozeman, right next to Free People, Anthropologie, and Lululemon—and they want specialty coffee for two days of grand opening celebrations, you don't say "it's too cold" or "it's too far."

You say yes. Then you figure it out.

Why Bozeman? Why Madewell?

Bozeman isn't just another mall town. It's where mountain culture meets genuine style. Where people who ski 100 days a year also care about what they wear and what they drink. Madewell understood this. Their first mountain-adjacent store wasn't going to be some watered-down version of their SoHo flagship. It needed to feel right for the place.

Same with the coffee.

They didn't want just any coffee service. They wanted something that reflected their values: sustainable, thoughtful, well-made. We choose to serve with plastic-free cups. Custom branding. A setup that looked as intentional as their store design. Coffee that their guests would actually remember.

We get that. That's literally what we do.

The Setup: Madewell × LUKA

The Brief:

  • Two-day grand opening weekend (November 15-16)
  • 3 hours of service each day
  • Day 1: 250+ guests
  • Day 2: 100 guests
  • Indoor setup inside the new store
  • Aesthetic needs to complement Madewell's brand
  • Sustainable service ware
  • Coffee needs to be exceptional

What We Brought:

Our mobile coffee cart—the one we designed specifically so any brand can make it theirs. No LUKA logos plastered everywhere. Clean lines. Professional. Adaptable. For Madewell, we added their branding to cups and created custom signage that felt like it belonged.

The Coffee Menu:

This is where it gets good. We didn't just bring our usual lineup. We curated something special:

  • Specialty beans from our recent sourcing trips to Bali and European roasters
  • Our core offering from Overview Coffee, Jackson Hole's finest roaster (we're loyal to our neighbors)
  • Ceremonial matcha, direct trade from a farm in Kyoto, Japan
  • Our signature vanilla latte—always a crowd favorite

We offered everything from light to medium roasts, though medium roast dominated. People in mountain towns want coffee with body, something that holds up to early mornings and long days.

The Reality: What Actually Happened

Our mobile coffee bar inside Madewell's new Bozeman location—minimal branding, maximum craft.

Setup took about 90 minutes the first morning. (We're upgrading to a van soon, which will cut that to 15 minutes, but for now, building the cart is part of the process.) The cold was real. Zero degrees outside, and we're bringing in equipment that really doesn't love those temperatures. You learn to work fast.

But once we were up and running? Magic.

Over two days, we served 400+ drinks. Three-hour windows don't sound long until you're pulling shot after shot, steaming milk to silk, making sure every single cup lives up to what people expect when they hear "specialty coffee."

What People Said:

"This is probably the best coffee I've ever had at a pop-up."

"You can actually taste the difference—this isn't just average coffee."

Multiple people mentioned how clean and professional our setup looked, especially for a mobile operation. One guest specifically noted how our aesthetic matched Madewell's vibe: curated, premium, intentional.

And here's the one that matters: Madewell's team told us they want to work with us again when they open new stores across the West.

The Surprise Connections

When coffee becomes part of the shopping experience, not just a convenience. Guests spent more time, lingered longer, left happier.

Sometimes the best part of an event isn't planned.

We connected with the few marketing team from Jackson Hole, a luxury property that epitomizes mountain elegance. We met folks from The One & Only in Big Sky, one of Montana's premier destinations. We even ran into some of our regular Jackson Hole customers who drove to Bozeman specifically for the Madewell opening—and were delighted to find us there.

That's the thing about doing this work in mountain communities. Everyone's connected. Word travels. Do something well, and people remember.

Why Retail + Specialty Coffee Works

When coffee enhances shopping instead of interrupting it. Madewell guests spent more time in-store, engaged more with products, and left with better memories. That's the power of integrating specialty coffee into retail spaces.

Most retail store openings serve whatever's easy. A coffee urn from a restaurant supply company. Maybe a Starbucks run. It's caffeine, sure, but it's forgettable.

Madewell understood something smarter: the coffee experience is part of the brand experience.

When someone walks into your new store and you hand them an exceptional latte made with beans sourced from Bali, served in a sustainable cup with your logo, prepared by an actual barista who knows what they're doing—that's not just coffee. That's a statement about who you are as a brand.

It says: We care about details. We value craft. We don't cut corners.

For luxury retailers, boutique brands, and anyone who's building something that matters, your grand opening coffee shouldn't be an afterthought. It should reinforce everything else you're doing.

The Drive Home

Four hours through Grand Teton and Yellowstone—the kind of commute that reminds you why we do this.

By the time we loaded up Sunday afternoon, we were tired. Good tired. The kind that comes from doing work that matters, work that people notice.

The drive back to Jackson Hole was quieter. Equipment safely stowed (and slowly warming up). Grand Teton at sunset. That specific exhaustion that only comes from pulling 400+ drinks over two days while maintaining standards you refuse to compromise.

We stayed at the Fields and Stream Hotel in Bozeman—solid hospitality, appreciated the warmth after those cold mornings. But mostly we just wanted to get home.

Worth it? Absolutely.

Madewell's Bozeman store is beautiful. Their team was exceptional to work with. The guests genuinely appreciated what we brought. And we got to prove once again that luxury coffee service isn't limited to major cities or easy logistics.

Sometimes it means driving through national parks at dawn. Sometimes it means setting up in a mall in Montana. Sometimes it means figuring out how to keep your equipment alive at zero degrees.

We're good with all of that.

If You're Opening a Store (Or Planning Any Retail Event)

Here's what we learned from two days in Bozeman:

Coffee service can elevate your brand if you're intentional about it. Generic coffee says "we needed caffeine." Specialty coffee says "we care about the experience."

Sustainability matters to your customers. Every single person noticed and appreciated the plastic-free cups. Some specifically thanked us for it.

Aesthetic integration is everything. Our cart didn't look like a random coffee vendor. It looked like part of Madewell's store design because we made sure it did.

People remember quality. Three months from now, most guests won't remember specific clothes they looked at during the opening. But they'll remember that the coffee was exceptional.

It's worth going the extra mile. Literally. Four hours through Yellowstone at 3 AM kind of extra mile.
